Do You Have the Senioritis Bug?

By Gerard Heirsch and Tyler Beaver

As seniors in high schools approach their last few months of school, they find themselves having to cross the biggest barrier ever, getting through the very last few months! Most seniors by the time the second semester hits, are already finished with having to wake up early and get to school. Everyone is ready to just live on their own, do whatever they want to do in college. Cory Ballas, a senioritis victim, says, “When I go home now, I never feel like doing anything for school because I am already [accepted into] college.” Students are ready to get the freedom they’ve been waiting for their whole lives. They are ready to get away and live by themselves without their parents or teachers telling them what to do.

High school students, especially the seniors, should not lose focus the last few months of their high school careers. Even though their time is running short, it is important to stay on task. To do so, seniors must keep up with homework that is due, continue to prepare for tests they will have to take, and especially focus in class. Even though most seniors have made it into college at this point, by keeping up with their current high school classes this will lead to a good habit for college. Just ask senior English teacher, Dr. Jacobi. She states, “I tell my seniors that they need to keep their momentum going throughout the year because if they slack off now, they aren't suddenly going to become motivated to do academic work when they start college in August.” If not corrected, the lazy senioritis mentality could transition over to college classes, and that would not be the best first impression for a college professor. By staying focused on grades, this can help a student prepare for switching into the independent college mode because no one will be telling him to keep up with grades, do homework, or study for a test. So, do not slack off and lose focus on what is important. This mentality needs to change because many goals have been set for the senior year, and they can be still be accomplished; all it takes is focus!
