The new Netflix movie Birdbox is all of the craze within the past month. It became so popular that there was a meme made out of it where people blind themselves and act out everyday activities. The movie takes place in modern day where life is simple and ‘regular’ for the average community. Everything was running smooth, but there was news about some entity that is wreaking havoc in Europe, striking fear in the people around the world. Within the next few days, things get…weird. The entity is known to strike fear into the individuals that witness it, so when people get sight of the entity, they eventually commit suicide. This is where the story takes off. The movie takes twists and turns throughout the many different settings and faces found in the movie. One scene two characters are in a car, then within two minutes, the main character could be found within a house full of a new set of people. The new characters are then introduced and bond together to have a deeper care for each other, like a family.
What I found interesting about the movie was the family aspect between Sandra Bullock and the people she meets throughout the film. It brought attention to the importance of our sight, and how life would be without it. In addition, the film showed the importance of children and how special they are to the world. Parents will do anything for the well-being of their children, even if it means putting their life at risk. I asked around for some opinions about Birdbox and my friend Josh, who I watched the movie with, flat out said, “It’s horrible” which I disagree with. The movie wasn’t horrible, it was actually an enjoyable experience. However, it wasn’t the movie that everyone hypes it up to be. The movie was decent at best. It’s very predictable to where it can be a comedy rather than the serious thriller it’s supposed to be. Other viewers believe that “the movie was very slow in the beginning, but towards the ending, it began to pick up,” which is agreeable. As the movie progressed, it began to ‘heat up’ to where I began to want to see what happens next in the hopes that new mysteries will be revealed. However, there were questions unanswered and the ending was underwhelming, which made me think that the movie was just decent. All of my hopes for the ending, which was expected to answer the questions that were unanswered and provide a good point to end, came crashing down to make the movie almost laughable.
