On Tuesday, October 23, the seventh and eighth grade Tiger Cross Country team won the New Orleans Athletic League Championship, besting second place Country Day by 31 points. In cross country, teams score points equal to their finishing place of their five fastest runners: 1st place is 1 point, 2nd place is 2 points, and so on. The team with the lowest score wins. Holy Cross scored a remarkably low 32 points to win the day.
Colin Volpe was the overall champion of the day, running the two-mile course in 12 minutes, 24 seconds. The remaining scoring five runners were Gage Baldassaro in 3rd place, Landon Davis in 6th, Casey Seput in 9th, and Dominic Pellegrin in 14th. Aedan DeFrates and Alex Walser finished in 16th and 18th place, respectively. Holy Cross had seven runners in the top 20 finishing spots.
The weather was rough. Persistent rain had saturated the course at Audubon Park, and a cool breeze made it feel colder than it was. Despite these conditions, the young Tigers averaged 13 minutes and 9 seconds for all seven runners, nearly 40 seconds in front of the squad for Country Day. This was a convincing win, a huge victory for Holy Cross.
We celebrate the accomplishments of these individuals and know that the future of cross country at Holy Cross School is bright. Congratulations boys, your Holy Cross Family is very proud of you!
