How Detention Created a Band

By Dominick Costello and Adrian Aguilar

Saturday September 8th Adrian and I got to interview the band L90 with members: Brad Boozer’19 (lead guitarist), Matt Manzella’20 (bass), Robert Shexneyder’20 (drums), and Evan Otan’20 (lead singer). L90 is a high school rock band made through friendships and music skills. The band has played at many school events such as dances and pep rallies. They practice and play all sorts of rock songs. L90 is not just a band, it is a group of lifelong friends that enjoy playing music together. This is a great group of guys and all of them have big hopes and dreams for their music careers later in life. While they all come from different background they share a common interest, music. Their unfortunate circumstances of meeting in detention led them to a brotherhood.

(Q)Costello: So, what got you guys into music in the first place?

(A)Manzella: “It started when Rob and I met in Saturday school and started talking about music.”

(A)Shexneyder: “I started playing drums about 5 years ago and Matt started bass when I met him about 3 years ago.”

(A)Boozer: “I’ve been playing guitar for about 5 years.”

(A)Otan: “I’ve been playing piano and singing for about 5 years.”

(Q)Aguilar: Did you guys think the band would get this popular?

(A)Boozer: “We hoped but initially we just played a few songs in the garage and it sort of took off from there.”

(A)Manzella: “We would bike ride to get fried chicken then go back and jam out.”

(A)Shexneyder: “We usually would play 2 songs then do some other stuff.”

(Q)Costello: What do you guys think about this new generation of music?

(A)Boozer: “They all love the revivalists.”

(A)Shexneyder: “Anything with instruments I will listen to.”

(A)Otan: “None of the EDM nonsense.”

(Q)Aguilar: Who sleeps the most?

“Everyone points to brad”

(A)Otan: “Brad would miss practices because he would be asleep.”

(Q)Costello: What’s the plan after high school?

(A)Otan: “I will never stop playing music, I want to expand my opportunities.”

(A)Shexneyder: “I will never stop playing drums, but we will see what happens with the band.”

(A)Manzella: “I want to go to wherever there is a music scene, keep writing and recording as long as its music I will be happy.”

(A)Brad: “Get as many gigs and work hard, maybe start writing if we have time.”
