Two members of the Holy Cross Debate team, Senior Tahj Johnson and Junior Nick Davillier have qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament on June 13th. Both Tigers are two of only four students from Louisiana to be sent to nationals for the Lincoln-Douglas debate. The two other students accompanying them will be Madison Keyser from Southside Highschool and Jackson Hayes from Caddo Magnate High School. Competing in the NSDA tournament is a massive achievement that many debaters strive to reach, but the real story on how Johnson and Davillier got there highlights the true comradery between teammates.
Originally, Davillier and Johnson were paired together in the semi-finals, and Davillier, being the higher seed, was chosen to move on to compete at the national level. However, he tried to offer Johnson his place, as this was Johnson’s last year in debate. “Tahj is a senior and I knew that this was his last chance for state, and I thought it was the best thing to do, and I knew he would win it for us” Davillier commented. Johnson’s reaction, however, was mixed, and he refused the generous offer. When asked about his reaction to Davillier offering his spot, Johnson commented “It was bittersweet. I felt bad that Nick couldn't continue to compete for the title with me. The goal was for us to close out. However, I felt inspired because I had to win this title for myself, Nick, and the team”. Fortunately, this would be resolved when a few other debaters who had qualified would eventually switch from Lincoln-Douglas leaving a spot open for Johnson. Davillier remarked, “It felt good that even if it was through luck it's still nice that our skill and abilities where recognized”. Mrs. Sasha Kreinik, Debate Team Moderator stated, "I’ve never been more proud of two people."
Both Nick Davillier and Tahj Johnson are exemplary debaters, Davillier having won 4 tournaments and is competing in the National Forensic Catholic League along with the NSDA tournament and Johnson having won 4 tournaments including State Tournament of Champions for Lincoln-Douglas. Their skills will be tested at the NSDA tournament, but they are eager to compete against seasoned debaters from across the state. Johnson remarked, “I am excited for nationals. I'm ready to showcase my talents and represent my school. I can say that as my [high school] career comes to an end, I have done everything I can to be the best leader and debater I can”. Holy Cross wishes these two young men the best of luck. Go Tigers!
