On Friday, the Holy Cross Tiger football team took on the Archbishop Rummel Raiders for the FOX 8 Football Friday “Game of the Week” at Tad Gormley Stadium. The Raiders, coming off an impressive 30-0 win against Brother Martin were ready to take on the Tigers. On the other hand, the Tigers were coming off of 49-26 win against 4A runner-up, Warren Easton. Defensive Back coach, Coach Collin said “We had been prepping for this game all week and also had a great week of practice. We felt, as a coaching staff, this would be a great opportunity for our players to come out with a big win.” The game began with Archbishop Rummel hopping out to a 14-0 lead against the Tigers. Coming out of the half, the Tiger offense moved the ball down inside the Rummel five-yard line. The Raider defense, who hasn’t given up a touchdown all year, held the Tiger offense on both 1st and 2nd down. However, on 3rd and goal from the Raider 2-yard line junior running back Jaden Handy punched it in for a touchdown. The score in the late 3rd quarter was Rummel 14 Tigers 7. Ensuing possession, the Raiders entered into field goal range where they ultimately kicked a field goal making it 17-7. This field gave the Raiders a sense of breathing room going into the fourth quarter. A blocked punt by senior linebacker, Tyler Grubbs gave the Tigers a sense of hope and put them at the Rummel 31 yard-line. The Tigers struggled with penalties all night, putting them further and further behind the changes. Head Coach, Guy LeCompte mentioned the penalties saying “Offensively we had some penalties that put us behind the chains. You can’t do that against a team like this.” On the last play the Tigers dropped back to throw the ball until a Rummel defensive end came up with a sack to end the game. Though the Tigers lost the game, they ended the streak of the Raider defense not allowing a touchdown - a victory in the Tiger books! The Tigers next opponent is the John Curtis Patriots on October 25 at Tad Gormley Stadium. Kick off is set for 7:00. Go Tigers!
