NEW ORLEANS—Holy Cross School honored its 2019 Alumnus of the Year Alvin R. Albe, Jr. at a banquet held March 23 on the school’s Paris Avenue campus. Family and friends of Albe joined him to celebrate the occasion.
Albe is a 1971 graduate of Holy Cross and earned an accounting degree from the University of New Orleans. He began his business career in the New Orleans office of a national accounting firm, and then went into the oil business working for Freeport McMoran. In 1982 Albe moved to Los Angeles to work for a member of Freeport’s board of directors and joined the management committee of The TWC Group, Inc. in 1991.
Albe remained in Los Angeles the rest of his business career, building one of the largest investment companies in America, having championed entrance into what was a new concept in American finance — mutual funds available for purchase over the Internet. TCW eventually grew its mutual funds complex into a multi-billion-dollar family of funds. TCW was sold in 2001, but as a condition of the sale, the new owner required Albe to remain in management of the company for five years.
After Hurricane Katrina, Albe bought a house in the French Quarter and devoted his time and resources to the rebirth and sustainability of Holy Cross School, including six years of service to the Holy Cross board of directors. He felt honored to serve the institution that he always believed played such an important role in making him the man, and the businessman, that he ultimately became.
Holy Cross congratulates Alvin R. Albe, Jr., for his business and philanthropical achievements and we thank him for his significant contributions to Holy Cross School.
